Fishing the rivers of New Mexico can be both exhilarating and challenging. Between the beautiful scenery and the tranquil settings, fishing the pristine waters of New Mexico is the perfect vacation escape for the whole family.
We recommend fishing the Wild Rivers Recreation Area, the Red River, the Rio Hondo, and the Rio Grande in the Orilla Verde Recreation Area.
The Wild Rivers Recreation Area, located 35 miles north of Taos, provides excellent fishing in both the Red River and Rio Grande. Trails pass through open sage land on the mesa and enter an ancient pinon-juniper forest. Along with cutthroat trout, New Mexico's state fish, fishermen can expect to see brown and rainbow trout, and Northern pike. The Red River meets the Rio Grande at Wild Rivers and there is a short one-mile hike down to the river. You can also expect to see the red-tailed hawk, golden eagle, great blue heron, and mule deer. This is truly a beautiful and tranquil area, the perfect retreat from it all.
The Orilla Verde Recreation Area is 16 miles south of Taos, along the Rio Grande Valley corridor. Here fishermen can gain easy access to riverbanks. Cottonwood and willow grow along the water's edge and beaver and muskrat swim near the shore. Dark basalt rock formed by ancient lava flows can be seen on the canyon walls. Rainbow and brown trout are the most popular catch.
Red River supports a fish hatchery for rainbow trout located upstream from Wild Rivers. Bountiful pools perfect for lure or bait fishing can be found along the river. This is also a great spot for the fly fisherman. An old mining road runs upstream giving access to pools tucked between cottonwoods and tall grasses. Upstream the trail winds along rocks and sage. Rainbow trout are the most popular catch. The elusive brown provides a challenge for even the most seasoned fisherman. There is a children's fishing area with a stocked pond making Red River a superb area for a family fishing tour.
Take a drive down into the Rio Grande Gorge to reach the Rio Hondo. This tour is as scenic getting there as it is standing in the river with your waders on. Here the Rio Hondo meets the Rio Grande allowing easy access for fishers of all abilities. This is also the launch area for rafters doing the Taos Canyon Box. Downstream, several hot springs can be found riverside. You can expect to catch rainbow and brown trout.
